Arnold Vaatz was among the East German intellectuals behind the peaceful revolution of 1989. He was a founding member and spokesman of the "Neues Forum" civil rights movement, and was also on the special "Round Table" set up after the fall of the Wall to bring the outgoing communist regime together with reformists. He is now a member of the German parliament.
