Aung San Suu Kyi

A court in Burma has found opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of violating the terms of her house arrest and sentenced her to three years behind bars.

But Burmese junta leader Senior General Than Shwe immediately commuted the sentence to 18 months' house arrest.

The court said Suu Kyi had breached the terms of her detention and violated an internal security law by allowing a US citizen to swim to and stay at her lakeside home-cum-prison in May this year.

The American in question, John Yettaw, was sentenced to seven years incarceration with four years hard labor.

Critics say the case is a ploy by Burma's military rulers to keep Suu Kyi where they can see her in the run up to next year's general election.
