Close up still shot of Amelie Fried

Members of Amelie Fried's father's family suffered in the Holocaust

Retrospectives and looks back are often quite popular in the arts world. A well known German TV presenter – Amelie Fried has been drawing in crowds at readings of her latest book- 'Schuhhaus Pallas: How my family defended themselves against the Nazis'.

The book details Fried's discovery a few years back that family members of hers were killed in the Holocaust. Her grandfather managed to survive despite being forced into a concentration camp.

One thing that sets her book apart is the amount of time she spends explaining and defining the Holocaust- that includes literally in the index. Fried says some of the younger generation need this definition as time passes, even as wounds from decades ago still need to heal.

Here, Amelie Fried talks about her writing as a form of personal discovery and collective art therapy.
