Several EU member states and the European Commission are now working closely together to change that. EU FIRE 5 they say is the answer. It’s still only a pilot project, but it's showing how the combined resources of member states can be used to respond to emergencies. And as Barbara Gruber reports, it's also laying the foundations of a future European rapid intervention force for disasters – on the continent and abroad.
