This month Germans celebrated the 21st anniversary of reunification. Following the official proclamation of reunification in 1990, Germans have been celebrating this auspicious day on October 3rd.
However, from 1954 until 1990 Unity Day was celebrated on a different date, marking a famous uprising in the former East Germany. In 1953, construction workers downed tools and the strike turned into a widespread anti-regime uprising. But on what date?
