Slovenian journalists are calling for an independent commission to be launched to investigate allegations of government censorship and political pressure on the media. Last year a petition accusing the Slovenian government of censorship was signed by more than 500 journalists and circulated throughout the EU. Shares in several media companies are held by the state and journalists argue that the Slovenian government is putting pressure on media outlets that criticised the government of Prime Minister Janez Jansa.
