Since 2003, the Homeless World Cup has not just become reality it has become a phenomenal success. Sportswear manufacturer Nike, the European Fooball Association UEFA, and even the United Nations provide support. Professional teams like Manchester United and Real Madrid have sponsored players from their countries. Mel Young is now the "FIFA-Präsident" of homeless football.
"100 million people are homeless around the world," he says. "We have to integrate them back in society. Football can make them heroes again:"
Our reporter Patrick Benning met Mel Young in his home city, Edinburgh, and accompanied him to the Homeless Worldcup 2007, which ran until August 4 in Copenhagen.
