Less than an hour’s drive from Mittenwald is Innsbruck, capital of the Austrian Tyrol. With high mountains providing the backdrop to the narrow lanes of the late Gothic old town, Innsbruck enjoys a magnificent setting. Along with the Imperial Palace, a major draw for tourists is the "Goldenes Dachl" or Golden Roof, which in November and December overlooks the Christmas Market. Here Alexander ends his tour sampling a pair of festive local specialities – Kiachl, a deep-fried pocket of dough filled with cranberry sauce, and Glühmost, a warming drink of fermented apple and pear juice.
