Driven by the aim to promote the sustainable development of humankind, society and earth, Ibrahim Abouleish founded the SEKEM initiative in 1977. The SEKEM Group supports cultural initiatives, providing education, healthcare and research through the SEKEM Development Foundation. The foundation has established a variety of cultural enterprises, including educational and vocational training institutions, medical care, research centers and the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development.
