Alvin Marcelo is an expert on health informatics with more than 15 years of experience. He was named one of The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) of 2005 for Medicine/Medical Informatics in the Philippines and was among the finalists of the Stockholm Challenge 2006 for the Community Health Information Tracking System.
In 2006, Marcelo was appointed director of the University of the Philippines Manila – National Telehealth Centre. He is also an associate professor and chief of the university's medical informatics unit and the director of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine. He was managing director of the International Open Source Network for ASEAN+3 of the United Nations Asia Pacific Development Information Programme (UNDP-APDIP). Presently he is senior vice-president and chief information officer of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) with current projects on electronic claims, standards, and interoperability.
