Marites Danguilan Vitug is an author and journalist. She is editor at large of www.rappler.com and president of the Journalism for Nation Building Foundation.
She has written six books, the most recent of which is Hour Before Dawn: The Fall and Uncertain Rise of the Philippine Supreme Court. Her previous book, the best-selling Shadow of Doubt: Probing the Supreme Court, is the first to lift the veil of the Supreme Court in the Philippines. Its e-book version landed in the top ten best-selling books at Amazon in the "courts" category. The Manila Rotary Club recognized it as an outstanding non-fiction book written by a journalist in 2010. Shadow of Doubt has become a critical success.


Vitug has received numerous awards, including the Courage in Journalism Award from the U.S.-based International Women’s Media Foundation, for her reportage on the plunder of Palawan’s forests; the Ozanam Award from Ateneo University in 2011, for her body of work; the University of the Philippines Outstanding Alumni Award in 2010; and the Jaime V. Ongpin Investigative Journalism Award (as finalist); and the Ten Outstanding Young Filipinos Award in the field of journalism.


Vitug was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1986-1987, after which she completed postgraduate studies in international relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science, graduating with merit. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in broadcast communication from the University of the Philippines, where she also pursued a postgraduate course in mass communications.
