Golineh Atai was born in 1974 in Iran and moved to Germany in 1980. She received her Master's degree in Romance studies, political science and Iranian studies from the University of Heidelberg. Atai trained in journalism at SWR, a regional public broadcaster in southwest Germany, and the ARD network grouping the regional broadcasters in 2002.

Since then she has worked as a television reporter, host, documentary maker and correspondent. In 2003 she contributed to reports on the Iraq War for the German public broadcasters’ main news programs Tagesschau and Tagesthemen. In 2004 she reported from Cairo, Lebanon and Sudan, and traveled to India to work on a documentary for the series Menschen Hautnah (people up-close).

From 2006 - 2008 Atai was based in Cairo as correspondent for the Arab region, reporting from Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Dubai, Libya, the Emirates, Jordan, Iran and Iraq. She also covered the Lebanon war in 2006 and the Darfur-Sudan conflict.

Since 2008 Atai has been on the editorial team at the national network's morning news program, which she also occasionally hosts. Since 2011 she has featured as an on-air expert in current Arab affairs on various ARD TV and radio programs and has presented events on the Middle East, Islam and the topic of integration in Germany.

Atai has also worked on a number of TV documentaries on topics such as the adoption of foreign children/child trafficking and the revolution in Egypt. She is co-founder and vice chair of DIWAN, an intercultural organization for German-Iranian affairs. Atai speaks Persian, French, English, Arabic and Spanish.
