Rekacewicz, Philippe

Geographer, Cartographer and Journalist, Le Monde diplomatique, Paris, France

Philippe Rekacewicz is a geographer, cartographer and journalist. After studying geography at the University of Paris la Sorbonne, he became a permanent collaborator of the international newspaper Le Monde diplomatique in Paris in 1988 (today with 70 editions in more than 30 languages). From 1996 to 2007 he was also the head of the cartographic unit at the United Nations Environment Programme's (UNEP) GRID-Arendal office in Norway.

Rekacewicz focuses on issues such as demography, refugees and displaced persons, migration and stateless persons. More broadly his professional interests lie in geopolitics and geostrategy, war and conflicts as well as social territories, and public and private space. Rekacewicz works on a number of other projects as well, studying how communities, political and economic powers produce the cartographic vision of the territories in which they operate and how they can use maps to manipulate and spread lies.
