Neville Alexander is an educator, political activist and linguist from Cape Town, South Africa. He is an avid promoter of multilingualism. For his struggle against the apartheid regime he spent ten years in prison on Robben Island. Alexander is currently director of PRAESA (Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa). He has done pioneering work in language policy and planning in South Africa with various government departments, including education. His most recent work has focused on the tension between multilingualism and the hegemony of English in the public sphere. He is a recipient of the Linguapax award, and is involved in the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN).
