    After a day on which Dortmund and Bayern had kept their title challenges on track, Borussia Mönchengladbach reminded fans it's not yet a two-horse race. The Foals front four - Patrick Herrmann, Marco Reus, Juan Arango and Mike Hanke (pictured) - tore Schalke apart on Saturday night, earning them a 3-0 win and a hold on third place, three back of leaders Dortmund.

    Dortmund have become known for their flowing football - on Saturday they showed they can grind out a win, defeating Bayer Leverkusen 1-0 at home. Shinji Kagawa's goal was the difference in a lackluster match that left losers Leverkusen ten points adrift of the Champions League places.

    Against Kaiserslautern, Bayern Munich showed their class, getting an easy 2-0 win. Mario Gomez (l.) and Thomas Müller scored inside of 30 minutes, and the result was not much in doubt for the game's final two thirds. Kaiserslautern - the league's most offensively anemic side - failed to create any good chances, and had just two shots on frame all day.

    Just two days after firing Holger Stanislawski, Hoffenheim had a new coach on the touchline. And Markus Babbel (pictured) nearly came away with a win in Bremen. After going up early, Hoffenheim held off Werder until the 89th minute - when Marko Arnautovic scored to level the game at 1-1.

    Mohamed Zidan (pictured) continued his storybook return to action with Mainz, scoring a second goal in as many games. In his first home match in a Mainz shirt since 2007, Zidan celebrated his seventh-minute goal with a red and white pacifier in his mouth. Hanover would get the last laugh, however, as Artur Sobiech scored an equalizer in the 89th minute.

    VfB Stuttgart put Hertha Berlin to the sword on Saturday, winning 5-0 and extending the capital club's winless streak to ten matches. Vedad Ibisevic (r.) opened the scoring with a flying close-range strike, and Hertha were down 3-0 - and down to 10 men - after half an hour. Berlin coach Michael Skibbe has presided over nothing but losses in his four league games in charge.

    Czech international Petr Jiracek (l.) was the difference in Wolfsburg's 3-2 win over Freiburg, getting the opening goal and the winner. The 25-year-old joined the Wolves from Viktoria Plzen in January. The win put Wolfsburg back in the hunt for Europe and left Freiburg rooted to last place.

    Nuremberg coach Dieter Hecking had predicted this game "might not be pretty" in the days leading up to it, and boy was he ever right. Augsburg looked better in the first half, Nuremberg in the second, but both teams played poorly throughout in a game for fans of tough tackling and misfired passes.

    Cologne and Hamburg were each hoping to get out of relegation with a win in their match on Sunday. After 89 minutes of scoreless football in Cologne, Paolo Guerrero's goal decided the match for the visitors. The win took Hamburg up to tenth place on 26 points.

    As hosts, the red-and-whites automatically qualified for the European Championship. Poland achieved its best result to date back in 1972, when the team won gold at the Olympic Games in Munich. The team has only taken part in one European Championships so far - in 2008. But the Polish team went out in the early stages.

    Ukraine

    Like fellow hosts Poland, the Ukrainian side qualified automatically for Euro 2012. After the breakup of the former Soviet Union, Ukraine has failed to qualify for the championships. Ukraine sits at 48th place in the world rankings. Their captain is Anatoli Tymoschtschuk, who plays for Bayern Munich.

    Germany

    The team led by trainer Joachim Löw was the first to qualify for Euro 2012. Ten wins in ten games is their impressive tally from the qualification rounds. That's why the world number three team is one of the favorites for the European title this time round. The German side has already won the European title three times (1972, 1980, 1996) and made it to six European finals.

    Spain

    The Spanish team is the reigning world and European champion - which says a lot in itself. Oh, and they are also top of the world rankings. They collected the European title back in 1964. Their nickname "La Furia Roja" means "red fury" in English and harks back to the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, at which Spain won a silver medal.

    England

    The "Three Lions" are among the oldest national teams in the world. Their biggest achievement to date was becoming world champions in 1966 on home soil. In Euro 1996, England lost to Germany in the semi-finals. At the last European Championships held in Austria and Switzerland, the English team didn't even manage to qualify. They are ranked seventh in the world.

    The Netherlands

    Their biggest success was winning the European title in 1988 - the Dutch have taken part in eight European Championships. In August, 2011, the team topped the FIFA world rankings for the first time (they are currently second). The side is known as the orange eleven or "oranje," because of their traditional orange shirts and the House of Orange - the Dutch monarchy.

    Italy

    The so-called Squadra Azzurra (the azure blues) is one of the most successful national teams in football. Italy has won the World Cup four times, most recently in 2006. They also became European Champions in 1968 when Italy was hosting the tournament. The team, ranked sixth in the world, easily qualified for Euro 2012. The Italian side is always among the favorites for the title.

    France has slipped to 15th place in the world rankings and lately the team has grabbed headlines more often because of football scandals than sporting achievement. But the formidable French were crowned world champions in 1998, and European Champions in 1984 and 2000. In the qualification stages for Euro 2012, the team came through as group winners on the last day.

    Ireland

    For the first time in 23 years, Ireland has qualified for the European Championships. The Irish faced Estonia in the playoffs, and came through (4-0, 1-1). The team, coached by Giovanni Trapattoni, sits at number 25 in the world rankings and is therefore seen as an outside chance for Euro 2012. The last time Ireland got through to the final stages of a major tournament was the 2002 World Cup.

    The Czech Republic

    The Czechs qualified for Euro 2012 after beating Montenegro (2-0, 1-0). The Czechs' biggest triumph came in Euro 1996, when they lost to Germany in extra time in the championship final. Since then, Tomas Rosicky has captained his team to every European Championships.

    Croatia

    The "Kockasti" ("the checkers") beat Turkey in the playoffs (3-0, 0-0). It's their fourth time in the European Championships. Their best performance to date was in the 1998 World Cup in France, when they came third. Four Bundesliga players are in the Croatian line-up: Ivica Olic, Daniel Pranjic (who both play for Bayern Munich), Mario Mandzukic (Wolfsburg) and Ivan Perisic (Borussia Dortmund).

    Sweden

    Sweden's heyday was over 50 years ago, when the team was runner-up in the 1958 World Cup and won the gold medal at the 1948 Olympic Games. The Swedish team has taken part in four European Championships, and the country hosted the tournament in 1992. At the moment, the Swedes are placed 14th in the world rankings.

    Denmark

    Denmark were crowned European Champions back in 1992. In addition, the so-called "Danish Dynamites" know their way around European Championship finals. Euro 2012 will be their eighth such tournament in a row. In the qualification stages, the team, ranked 10th in the world, beat favorites Portugal to emerge top of group H.

    Russia

    The heyday of Russian football was during Soviet times when the USSR national team won the European Championships in 1960 and were runners-up on three occasions. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, Russia took part in the European Championships for the first time in 1996. Since then, they have only missed out in Euro 2000.

    Greece

    Greece's greatest achievement was their surprise win of the Euro 2004 title under German Otto Rehhagel, who coached the team from 2001 to 2010. It's the Greeks' fourth appearance in the European Championships. They are 8th in the world rankings. Greek football was recentlyrocked by a betting scandal.

    Portugal

    The Portuguese were the last team to qualify for Euro 2012, to be held in Poland and Ukraine. In the playoffs, the team, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, beat Bosnia-Herzegovina (6-2, 0-0). At number eight in the world rankings, Portugal has potential - but the team has never won a title, either on a European or a world level.
