A Royal baby boy

Prince William and Kate Middleton's first child has been born, a boy of 8 pounds and 6 ounces (around 3.8 kilograms). The boy, third in line to the British throne, was born in St Mary's hospital in the west of London.

The British royal couple, who wed in April 2011 at Westminster Abbey, did not want to know the sex of their child before the birth.

They did not immediately announce the name of the boy, who is now third in line to the throne behind his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his father, William.

The news traveled to a special easel set up at Buckingham Palace just before 9 p.m. local time (2000 UTC), some four and a half hours after the birth.

"Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m. (1524 UTC)," the special bulletin outside the palace read. "The baby weighs 8 lbs 6 oz."

The message also said that mother and son "are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight."

Crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace in the scorching summer sun cheered the announcement when it was made.

In a press release, the Windsor family said that Queen Elizabeth II, her husband Philip, Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Prince Harry and other members of the Windsor and the Middleton families "have been informed and are delighted with the news."
