The UN Security Council has imposed further sanctions on Iran in the hope that the country will abandon its nuclear ambitions. The European Union and the United States have also introduced additional punitive measures against the Islamic republic.

While western nations suspect that Tehran's nuclear enrichment program is aimed at producing weapons, Iran insists it is purely for peaceful purposes.
