Bayern in Dortmund's web

Mark HallamAugust 13, 2014

Borussia Dortmund have claimed the pre-season bragging rights, beating a disjointed and experimental Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Supercup. Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Spiderman, better known as Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, netted.

Borussia Dortmund lifted the first trophy of the new season on home turf on Wednesday, beating Bayern by two goals just as they did in 2013. Armenian playmaker Mkhitaryan and Gabonese speedster Aubameyang scored either side of half time, with Aubameyang disguising himself as Peter Parker when celebrating his headed goal.

The result utterly matched the run of play, in a game where Bayern struggled both for defensive stability and midfield creativity playing a new 3-4-3 formation. Dortmund pressed fiercely and broke with pace, frequently asking questions of Bayern's back line. The busy bees in yellow and black outshot their guests by 22 to four on the night.

With Sebastian Rode, 17-year-old Gianluca Gaudino, left wing-back Jaun Bernat, and former Dortmunder Robert Lewandowski all making their Bayern debuts, the young team struggled to gel - even with the half-time introduction of Philipp Lahm into defensive midfield.

"We have a lot of injuries and missing players," Lahm said on ZDF television after the defeat. "So it wasn't so easy today... We're still in the middle of our season preparations."

Dortmund played two debutantes in Matthias Ginter and striker Ciro Immobile - but it was two of last summer's signings who stole the show on Wednesday.

Lively playmaker Mkhitaryan sought to play Aubameyang through on goal in the 23rd minute; Bayern's defense partially cleared the pass, but it fell straight back into the Armenian's path. Mkhitaryan, noted for his wastefulness in front of goal at times last season, made no mistake with his right foot. Manuel Neuer, probably Bayern's busiest player all night, was left with no chance.

Bayern's defense was destabilized further after around half an hour when Javi Martinez was forced off injured; Dante replaced him in central defense. Dortmund peppered Neuer's goal many times in the remainder of the first half, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

In the second half, even Lahm's introduction failed to markedly change Bayern's fortunes. The captain played Lewandowski through on goal soon after the restart, but Mitchell Langerak came to Dortmund's rescue.

Before long, it was BVB making the forward running - and on 62 minutes, Aubameyang rose to meet a Lukasz Piszczek cross and head it past Neuer into the bottom corner.

Little to test Langerak

Even after the introduction of former Dortmund player Mario Götze, booed heartily by the home faithful despite his World Cup-winning goal for Germany this summer, Bayern never really launched a serious comeback bid. Only David Alaba called Langerak back into serious duty, with a well-hit free-kick that the Australian parried to safety.

Jürgen Klopp's side thus claimed the first silverware of the season, and might have hoped for a larger margin of victory based on the flurry of late opportunities either squandered or saved by Neuer.

Last season, however, Dortmund beat an experimental Bayern lineup - still learning a new system under Pep Guardiola - 4-2 in the Supercup. Bayern went on to win the domestic double, and claim the league in record time. Klopp and co. will hope this year's symbolic win is not the only silverware of the season.
