Easy Listening, Hard Bargaining
They sing about love, their home and about longing - the Germans call it ‘Volksmusik’. It’s meant to be good for the soul. But the situation behind the scenes is often anything but amiable. Hard bargaining, calculating managers, pressure and exploitation - that’s the dark side of the feel-good industry. Up-and-coming talents complain about one-sided contracts. Established performers are resigned to their situation and simply call themselves a ‘commodity’. One East German town was fleeced out of around half a million euros with a planned Volksmusik event. This film confronts one of the last big cash cows of the entertainment industry.
