In 1989, Maria Gołębiewski came to Germany with her husband and her three children. They were just five of around one million Poles who came to Germany in the space of just ten years in search of a better life. In 1988, chemist Andrzej Górak from Łódź was offered a job at a company in Düsseldorf for a year. His wife Barbara and he didn’t think long before accepting. Four years later, he became a tenured professor in Dortmund. Even so, both still say, "Poland is our country.”
