After a fortnight of tennis in Melbourne, the Australian Open is over for another year.

It was the pre-tournament favorite Novak Djokovic who reigned supreme on the final Sunday, seizing on an Andy Murray capitulation to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-0 in just under four hours.

After an even start to the match, Djokovic was first to get ahead, breaking Murray's serve in the eighth game of the first set. The Scot responded immediately to break the Djokovic serve, and at 6-6, the set went to a tie-break.

After two unforced errors from Murray, Djokovic won it 7-5 to seal the first set 7-6 in 72 minutes.

Murray - who had never beaten Djokovic having lost the first set - went 2-0 up to start the second set only for Djokovic to turn it around. Both players were struggling on their own serve and it was the Serbian who broke twice to go 3-2 up.

The sixth seed had not given up though and broke to bring the match level at 4-4, before going 5-4 ahead. The two played out an enthralling tenth game, with Djokovic holding out to making it 5-5 having let Murray back from 40-0.

Djokovic too hot to handle

Murray survived three break points to make it 6-5, before another tie-break decided the set and the Scot squared the match at 1-1.

Just two sets had been completed in 152 minutes and the trend stayed the same in the third set. Murray broke Djokovic to go 2-0 ahead, before the Serbian brought it back to 2-2 with his own break.

The No.1 seed then showed his class, again breaking Murray - who double-faulted for the second time in the match - to make it 5-3. He then served and won the third set in comfortable fashion, with Murray shouting in frustration.

Murray then capitulated, to the frustration of a supportive crowd in Melbourne.

Djokovic cruised to his fifth Australian Open title by breaking the Scot three times and winning the fourth set 6-0.

Djokovic is now the second player to win five Australian Open men's titles and retains his position as the No.1 ranked player in the world. He is also still to be beaten in an Australian Open Final.

"I have a different mind-set now that I'm a father, but this one is so special to me," Djokovic told Rod Laver Court at the trophy presentation.

Earlier in the day, Martina Hingis - who retired in 2007 before returning to tennis in 2013 - won her first Grand Slam title since 2006. The 34-year-old and mixed doubles partner Leander Paes beat Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor 6-4, 6-4.
