December 20, 2012, is the 200th anniversary of the publishing of the first volume of the Brothers Grimm’s "Children’s and Household Tales". Their famous collection of folk and fairy tales has been translated into 160 languages and is on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register for the preservation of cultural documents.
Frauke Oberländer studies art at Philipps University. She recommends Grimm Park, the Roter Stern bookshop and café, as well as "Die Schlucke”, a pub in the old town.
The steam-powered tugboat Tiger ploughs through the waves of the Elbe in the port of Hamburg. Passengers on board enjoy the feeling of times past, as the tug dates from 1910. Volunteers from the Oevelgönne Museum-Harbour Association make sure there’s pressure in the boiler and mulled wine in everyone's glasses.
Like the monks in the Middle Ages, visitors walk through the Cistercian monastery at Walkenried in Lower Saxony without the aid of electric light or heating. At the end of the tour they can warm up in the refectory and enjoy a typical Harz 'Kniesteressen': spicy roast potatoes.
