The crash happened early on Saturday morning on the A4 motorway, which links Poland and Germany, around 500 meters before the exit Dresden-Neustadt.

All seven occupants in the smaller minibus died, along with three people in the coach, according to police and firefighters. Some 40 more people were injured and rushed to nearby hospitals, with nine in critical condition.

Seven of the nine dead have been identified by German police as Polish nationals.

According to local police, the Polish coach crashed into a Ukrainian coach in front of it just before 2 a.m. local time, which caused it to skid across the motorway and through the median before colliding with the Polish minibus, which was traveling in the opposite direction.

Around 150 firefighters and rescue personnel were on site till dawn to recover victims and to help survivors.
