Seehofer wins CSU chair

At Saturday's convention of the Christian Social Union (CSU) in Munich, Seehofer received a record 95.3 percent of the party's votes to continue as chairman. Two years ago, he received 89.9 percent of the vote, and, in 2008, 90.3 percent.
The CSU is the Bavarian state party that partners with Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) at the national level.
The result was expected at the CSU's convention. Seehofer's four deputies are to be selected later on Saturday, with three out of four of his current deputies running for reelection.
Seehofer has been the state premier of Bavaria since 2008. His party, though aligned with Merkel's on many subjects, does not always toe the CDU line. In the current national coalition talks, Seehofer and the CSU have said a proposal that would levy tolls on foreign registered cars driving on German roads is a condition to joining Merkel's coalition. The chancellor and the CDU have rejected the idea.
