DW reporter Hanne Kehrwald accompanied the computer scientist Nazir Peroz on a journey through his native Afghanistan. What’s his take on developments in his war-ravaged homeland?

Coming Home - A Journey with Nazir Peroz through Afghanistan

Nazir Peroz is head of the Center for International and Intercultural Communication, the ZiiK, at Berlin’s Technical University. His areas of expertise are information technology and developing countries. Born in Kabul, he moved to Germany in the late 1970s. Now, with German help, he aims to revolutionize Afghanistan: since 2002, he has been working on setting up proper IT systems in his native country. Four times a year, the computer scientist tours the Afghan university towns with which he cooperates. Asked about his project’s prospects for success, his answer is always the same: “As long as it has young people, this country has a chance.”

Our image of Afghanistan is dominated by conflict and international military missions, and pictures of death and destruction, military casualties, the extremist Taliban. And the message is usually the same: getting involved in Afghanistan is pointless and expensive, the country more dangerous than ever. Is the legacy of the international intervention so desolate? What has been achieved? Or what can be achieved in future? Is there such a thing as a future for Afghanistan?
The Deutsche Welle camera team traveled around a war-torn country – to Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat. Terrorist attacks and firefights are everyday occurrences here. But Peroz is undeterred: he sticks to his goal and avoids dangerous detours or distractions. The report offers insights off the beaten track of war reporting and features encounters with people who embody the country’s hopes.
