July 17, 2012

The third Petersberg Climate Dialogue came to an end on Tuesday in Berlin. With just 35 delegates, the dialogue was a precursor to the much larger World Climate Summit, scheduled for December in Qatar.

At the final press conference in Berlin, one of the dialogue's co-chairs, German Environment Minister Peter Altmaier, said more needs to be done to slow climate change.

"Many countries already do a lot to protect the climate and reduce their emissions," Altmaier said. "But that's not enough to stay under the limit of 2 degrees."

Keeping the earth's temperature from rising more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels is one of the key components to climate negotiations.

Altmaier also said the Doha conference would be a key transition in climate policy, where "deals that are only binding for a few countries will give way to deals that bind all of us."

It is hoped that a new, binding international climate agreement can be reached by 2015 to replace to Kyoto Protocol, which expires this year.
