Christopher Springate first discovered his love of politics at university. Ever since, whether in his mother's native country Brazil, in the central Asian republic of Mongolia or in the North African nation of Libya, he has been fascinated by the task of discovering what parties and politicians stand for and what methods they use to climb the greasy pole of power. The son of a British airline executive, Christopher was born in 1965 in Hong Kong and spent much of his childhood abroad (Kuwait, Thailand, Canada), learning four languages in the process (French, German, Spanish and Portuguese).

After studying literature, history and journalism in Strasbourg, Cambridge, London and Paris, Christopher was finally brought to rest in the German capital by a blue-eyed Berlin teacher, with whom he now has two sons. Having graduated in 1990 from London´s Graduate Centre for Journalism (City University) and in 1991 from Paris´ Centre de Formation des Journalistes (Journalism Training Centre), he became a freelance journalist in Germany, working for the BBC World Service, New Statesman and Society (a London weekly), local Berlin radio and several national newspapers in Britain. Since October 1999, he's been DW’s English-language political correspondent as well as a presenter of DW´s weekly politics programme, "People & Politics". His hobbies are travel, world music, and soccer. Surfing on the Internet is also taking up an increasing amount of his time, especially The Economist´s web-site, "www.economist.com", which has a wonderful archive. Other sites he spends time consulting are "www.onlinenewspapers.com" (a link to thousands of newspapers worldwide) and "www.britannica.com" (which answers just about any question you can conceivably think of).

Among the many goals in life he would still like to pursue is learning Arabic. Learning the guitar is also on his list.
