Cologne fined for fan problems

The German Football Association has handed out a 200,000 euro fine to Bundesliga side Cologne after serious disturbances among its fans at two games this season. The club will be hit with other punitive measures, too.

Mid-table Bundesliga club FC Cologne will be forced to pay a 200,000 euro fine ($212,000) and will have its attendance restricted considerably at three of its home games before the end of the season, after its fans committed various misdemeanours at two separate games.

The viewer ban will see the club forced to leave part of its famous southern stand empty for three games, against Hoffenheim on April 12, Bayer Leverkusen on April 26 and against Schalke late in the season, on Matchday 32.

In addition the German Football Association (DFB) has said that the club will need to issue personalized tickets, and forbid any ticket swapping, for all away games. The club, for its part, has accepted the punishment.

The reprimands come after Cologne fans stormed the pitch at the club's local derby game at Borussia Mönchengladbach, and also misbehaved at Cologne's German Cup fixture against Duisburg on October 28 of last year.
