Border Stories - A Road Trip Back in Time
September 25, 2013In 1965, Joachim Giesel set out to document the border between East and West Germany from the western side. For the Hanover-based photographer, this experiment went on to become one his most enduring projects. Between 1965 and 1989, Giesel repeatedly photographed locations along the inner-German border – or what the communist regime referred to as the “anti-fascist barrier” on the East German side.
Now, a quarter-century after the opening of the border and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Giesel and his friend and colleague, author Dieter Bub, embark on a road trip to retrace that past. Together with a camera team, they spend four weeks touring old haunts along the now-defunct border in an old VW bus. The result is a fascinating documentary that captures the absurdity of the “line of demarcation” and of East Germany’s attempt to cordon itself off from the west.
