BMW recall

German luxury carmaker BMW has announced that it's withdrawing hundreds of thousands of its cars from markets outside Europe. It's the company's second-biggest recall and has the potential to taint the firm's image.

Carmaker BMW of Germany said on Monday that it was recalling a total of 750,000 cars from markets in the US, Canada, Japan and South Africa, adding that Europe was not affected by the move.

The luxury auto producer cited faulty power supply systems, which in extreme situations could lead to the engines stalling.

BMW said affected by the recall were its Z4 and X1 models as well as its 1-series and 3-series cars produced between March 2007 and July 2011.

Global increase in recalls

Clients had reported the problems to the Munich-based company, but there had been no reports about any serious damages or accidents.

The current recall is the second-largest in the company's history. It comes on the back of a similar move in March 2012 when a total of 1.3 million vehicles had to be recalled because of a fault in the braking system.

The automobile industry worldwide has been grappling with a sharply increasing number of recalls, with half of all cases being triggered by faulty electrical components.
