Biochar in India

Project Goal: Making arid ground fertile

Indian agriculture is being transformed by the use of biochar. In southern India, farmers are learning how to turn their crop waste into biochar – which, used as fertilizer, boosts soil fertility. Moreover, while the burning and natural decomposition of trees and agricultural matter contributes a large amount of CO2 to the atmosphere, biochar can store carbon in the ground, potentially making a significant reduction in atmospheric greenhouse gas levels.
