Biochar in India

November 9, 2010

Project Goal: Making arid ground fertile
Climate Goal: Carbon capture and storage in the soil
Project Region: 500 villages in the state of Tamil Nadu
Project Scale: Training for 5000 farmers so far

Indian agriculture is being transformed by the use of biochar. In southern India, farmers are learning how to turn their crop waste into biochar – which, used as fertilizer, boosts soil fertility. Moreover, while the burning and natural decomposition of trees and agricultural matter contributes a large amount of CO2 to the atmosphere, biochar can store carbon in the ground, potentially making a significant reduction in atmospheric greenhouse gas levels.
