The "Arab Spring" with all its promising opportunities and dashed hopes is perceived in Israel as a threat and uncertainty. The concessions Iranian President Hassan Rohani has made in respect of his country’s nuclear program may be seen in the West as a breakthrough, but the Israelis and Saudi Arabians are deeply skeptical. The cards in the Middle East are being reshuffled, but the historical roots of the various conflicts go very deep. Where does the hatred of Israel in the Arab world and Iran come from? Is it a just a political issue or do people really feel that way? This documentary accompanies Israeli soldiers on the Syrian border, Shiites and Sunnis in Lebanon and disappointed revolutionaries in Egypt, as well as enterprising Palestinians and desperate refugees.

Authors Jörg Armbruster and Richard C. Schneider look at what influence the Jewish and Arab lobbies in Washington have on Barack Obama’s Middle East policies. And they investigate the interests of the various powers behind the scenes in war-torn Syria, where the Gulf States, Russia, China, Iran and Iraq are also involved. The future of the new Middle East - between hope and despair.
