Up to a quarter of a million visitors are expected for the 50 shows and events during the capital's fashion week. Many events are open to the public.

Escada Sport showed its collection to start what is now officially called the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin.

New York designer Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton's creative director, is the patron of the fashion week which is held two times each year.

Berlin Partner, the city's inward investment agency headed by Melanie Bähr which “encourages investors to choose Berlin as the best place to start a business” markets the capital as an emerging fashion centre through its involvement.

The events reflect the German capital's reputation for younger and avant-garde urban wear.

The fashion week is based around runway shows for German and international designers presenting their spring and summer collections for 2013. The shows are held on the "Straße des 17. Juni" at the Victory Column.

Among the other events held during the week is BREAD AND BUTTER, an international trade fair for street and urban wear held at the former Tempelhof Airport. There is also an ethical fashion show which introduces new trends in ecological design as well as after-show parties, designer sales, a fashion film festival, and showrooms of up-and-coming designers throughout the city.

The Senate Department for Economics, Technology and Research co-finances individual events. The fashion week ends on Sunday July 8.
