Bayern's outstanding Austrian picked up the injury, as the Bavarians became the first German club to win their Champions League group as early as Matchday Four.

David Alaba will be ruled out for several weeks after damaging knee ligaments in the 2-0 win over Roma in the Champions League, the club confirmed.

Austria's Sportsmen of the Year in successive years limped down the Allianz Arena tunnel with nine minutes left and looks to be out of action for several weeks.

Featuring across the pitch for Bayern, Alaba's versatility has made him an integral figure under Pep Guardiola. It was the Austrian's excellent overlap that assisted the opening goal for Franck Ribery - but the news of his injury will be a massive blow to the German champions.

Guardiola confirmed that Alaba will undergo a scan tomorrow to find out the true extent of his knee injury.

"Alaba's injury is really, really bad news," the Spanish coach said. "We have to adapt to the situation. He's a total footballer and can play in so many positions."

Bayern are already without Spanish midfielder Thiago Alcantara who won't play until 2015 with a similar knee ligament injury, and Javi Martinez remains on the sidelines.
