Badstuber: surgery on new injury

Matt ZuvelaSeptember 14, 2014

Holger Badstuber, who recently received a warm welcome back in the Bayern Munich ranks after a 20-month injury absence, will have to go under the knife again. The team predicts he'll miss three months.

Just before halftime in Bayern Munich's match against Stuttgart on Saturday, Holger Badstuber played a ball deep in Stuttgart territory and took a shot on goal.

While Badstuber was not being covered when he took the shot, the kicking motion was a bit awkward, and he immediately pulled up short with an injury. He came off the pitch under his own power, and initial signs indicated that the injury wouldn't be serious.

But after further examination by Bayern's team doctor, Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, the team announced on Sunday that Badstuber had ruptured a tendon in his left thigh. The injury will require surgery and Badstuber will not be available to the team for "the foreseeable future."

"I'm obviously very disappointed right now,” Badstuber said in a statement on the club's website.

Badstuber had just returned to the squad at the start of the season after recovering from a double cruciate ligament injury that dated back to December 2012. His first match was over the summer in a friendly, and he quickly worked his way into Pep Guardiola's concept at Bayern.

"I now know how you deal with situations like this," he said. "I'll be back, and I'll pick it up from where I left off after battling to return from my long injury lay-off."
