On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared to adopt a more concilliatory tone regarding Ukraine. He said he was pulling back troops from the Ukrainian border and called for separatists to postpone a referendum on independence. There was scepticism in the west as to whether Putin was genuine or simply manoeuvring. Roman Goncharenko of DW's Russian service analyses the situation.
