Conserving Mauritius

You may have heard of the dodo, a bird only found in Mauritius. The animal died off at the end of the 17th century. But, not only the dodo disappeared from Mauritius after the first settlers had arrived. Other animals vanished too.

Even now, a lot of Mauritian animals and plants are still at the brink of extinction. But, there is hope: conservationists across the country are working hard to save various endangered species. They are even trying to reconstruct Mauritius' original ecosystem on small islands, like Ile aux Aigrettes.
