Audi's sales up

July 7, 2014

German luxury carmaker Audi has logged its best half-year sales in the company's history, lifted by booming sales in the world's two largest automobile markets, China and the US.

On Monday, the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer said it had sold 11.4 percent more cars than in the same period last year, for a total of 869,350 units.

Most of that growth was felt in China and the US, but Audi's sales figures for Europe were also on the rise.

In North America, the company was able to increase its sales by 12.8 percent on the year. In June alone, Audi sold 21.2 percent more cars in North America than in the same month last year.

The US has proven to be a remarkably lucrative market for Audi with 84,349 units delivered in the first six months of 2014. The company also posted its 42nd record-breaking month in a row there in June, the same month it launched the latest generation of its most popular model, the Audi A8.

Americans, however, were most likely to purchase the Audi Q5, a sport utility vehicle.

More drivers worldwide

In China, Audi delivered for the first time some 50,000 units to customers in June. Sales of its compact Q3 SUV, a popular model in the People's Republic, were up 61.3 percent - a major contributor to the steady sales growth.

Other German carmakers have also watched their revenues swell as more consumers around the world, particularly in emerging markets, opt to invest in four wheels.

Audi's rival and the maker of the popular Mercedes-Benz brand, Daimler, said just last week it had sold 783,520 vehicles in the first half of 2014, a company record and 12.8 percent more year-on-year.
