Iranians attacked in Iraq

Up to six have been killed and at least 20 wounded in a rocket attack on the camp of the Iranian dissident group Mujahadin-e-Khalq in Iraq. Formed in opposition to the Shah, the MEK now opposes Iran's theocracy.

The numbers vary, with Iraq's Interior Ministry reporting that only one person was killed and security officials telling the AFP news agency that five died. The death toll of six was given by an MEK spokesman, who also said that up to 50 people had been wounded. The attack took place at the former US military base Camp Liberty, just on the outskirts of Iraq's capital, Baghdad.

Dozens of mortars and rockets were fired at the camp early on Saturday, according to Iraqi security officials. The United Nations called for an immediate investigation and announced that monitors had begun following up on the deaths, the first confirmed fatalities as a result of violence since the group moved to the camp last year. Three Iraqi policemen were also wounded.

It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.
