The EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton has met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in an attempt to mediate between the government and protestors who are calling for his resignation. Kiev has been the scene of mass demonstrations since Yanukovych refused to sign an association agreement with the EU, but he maintains that Ukraine needs to strengthen its economic ties with Russia.
