Tops and Flops – The Year in Review

Members of our arts department have scoured their memories and the archives to unearth their own personal highs and lows of 2012. They include surprises at the Documenta international contemporary art exhibition, an opera marathon in Salzburg and the bizarre mega-hype surrounding the erotic novel "Fifty Shades of Grey”.

Out of Bayreuth - Lohengrin in Beijing

In our series Out of Bayreuth, reporters have been travelling the world from Beijing to Ohio to find out how Wagner is being performed today. Part 5: "Lohengrin" at Beijing’s National Grand Theatre. It’s well known that European classical music is popular in China, but the enthusiasm for Richard Wagner’s operas is a more recent phenomenon.

Art and Nature - Land Art in Munich

It’s actually a paradoxical exhibition, because land art can’t really be crammed into a museum. Munich’s Haus der Kunst has done so anyway and mounted a major exhibition. "The Ends of the Earth” shows the spectacular and the serene, art that is at home in meadows and forests.

Mourning and Hope - Requiem for Auschwitz

The Roma and Sinti Philharmonic Orchestra in Frankfurt has been in existence for ten years. Now its musicians, who come from all over Europe, are attracting attention with a spectacular event. In the "Requiem for Auschwitz”, they commemorate the forgotten suffering of Sinti and Roma under the Nazis.
