Anuja Ghosalkar, India

In Bangalore Anuja Ghosalkar, 33, leads a busy life. She manages a film festival, works at an arts foundation and acts in theatre plays. She finds Berlin surprisingly empty.

Anuja Ghosalkar is a participant in the five-week Berlin workshop "Film Festival and Event Management". One highlight gives in-depth insight into the international Berlinale film festival.

What was most surprising to you?
For the seminar, I came to Germany for the first time. It was also the first time I have seen snow, so when I landed, it was quite emotional. It was a very hearty welcome. Also, it was surprising to me how few people there are on the streets. It's much more crowded where I come from.

What are you learning in the seminar?
I am learning different ways of communicating with people from all over the world and different ways to run a film festival. We’re going over some of the strategies we’re already familiar with and we’ll see how they’re put into action during the Berlinale. It’s going to be fascinating.

What are you getting out of the seminar personally?
In a philosophical way, the seminar is broadening my mind and I am learning to view things differently than before. On a day to day basis, I am learning how to be a better communicator and how to present my festival professionally. I am also learning strategies that help me to better organize myself and my thoughts.

How is the atmosphere within the group?
It's great! We come from 12 different countries from 3 continents, so we talk a lot about cultural differences: about what we eat, or how we say hello, for example. It’s a very lively group, which is also very ambitious, but doesn’t take itself too serious.

On top of DW's roof in Berlin: our current participants of the workshop "Film Festival and Event Management"

The DW Akademie to me is …
…a window of opportunity. It has allowed me to step back from my routine and to rethink how we've been running the festival at home. Many avenues have opened up after just two weeks and there are many new options and ways of seeing the world with different eyes.

What do you do at the end of a day’s seminar?
I’ve been exploring the city and walking around Berlin a lot. I enjoy taking the metro, jumping on and off at different stops, And I also enjoy German beer!

What will be the first thing you do after the seminar is over?
The first thing I'll do when I return to India is give my husband a hug. I'll really be missing him by the end of the month.
