German Chancellor Angela Merkel has laid out her new government's policy on Europe during a speech in the Bundestag. Merkel said she wants to strengthen convergence of European policies. She also appealed to her European partners to tackle flaws of Europe’s currency union by agreeing binding economic reforms and pressing ahead with politically-sensitive changes to the bloc’s treaty.
