Amazon to open new store

October 10, 2014

Amazon.com is planning to open its first-ever brick-and-mortar store in New York City, an American newspaper has reported. It would mark the e-commerce giant's first foray into the world of face-to-face shopping.

The Wall Street Journal cited sources familiar with the matter Thursday as saying the Internet retailer could open its doors in Manhattan as early as this Christmas season, adding that the location could function as a mini-warehouse with limited inventory for same-day delivery, a station for online order pick-up and returns and a showcase for its Kindle e-readers and Fire smartphones and TV boxes.

The e-commerce giant's business model has always hinged on speedy deliveries, and the company has invested heavily in six new distribution centers in the run up to this holiday season. But it has never been able to offer customers the same in-and-out experience as a traditional shopping outlet.

The Journal noted that establishing a physical retail presence also comes with risks. Until now, Amazon has been able to avoid the cost of property leases or paying employees to staff any number of stores.

The new store would reportedly be housed across the street from the Empire State Building, in the same bustling street as Macy's flagship department store.

Amazon has not commented on the report.
