Agroforestry - The Revival of an Old Farming Concept

By planting trees in arable land, farmers can improve crop yields, prevent soil erosion, promote biodiversity and provide a source of energy.

Rapidly-growing trees such as poplars and willows can be harvested after just a few years, and if the roots are left intact, they will soon grow back again. Agroforestry, as it's called, dates back centuries, but now it's being rediscovered. Scientists in Germany are currently investigating whether it could be a good way to improve farming in the future.
