Klaus Wowereit has been mayor of Berlin for more than 13 years – a time when the city rose to become a world capital of the arts, and party culture. He was also one of the first openly gay politicians in Germany. Wowereit announced his resignation this week, amid falling popularity and a never-ending scandal over an airport.
