Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, Mexico City is a smog-trapping cauldron. For years, residents have been grappling with drastically high levels of air pollution and thousands of people die each year as a result of respiratory ailments. The Mexican government is taking action with a program called “Pro-Aire” which is meant to combat pollution. It’s being supported by Germany development agency GIZ which is advising the Mexican government on curbing greenhouse gas emissions. One measure involves paying a bonus to truck drivers to scrap their old gas-guzzling vehicles. Motorized traffic contributes hugely to Mexico City’s air pollution. Another measure involves providing residents with a breath of fresh air - the government is backing the establishment of gardens and green spaces on a number of roofs in the 20-million-strong mega city. Numerous plant species help to filter the air, absorb carbon and provide a cool, green oasis. The gardens are also providing a habitat for insects and animals.
