2012 - a good year for Germany's "Mannschaft"

At the end of this year the German men's soccer team finds itself in second place after Spain in the FIFA world rankings. And the whole country is proud of its young players.

Overall it has been a good year for German football - and also for the German national men's team. Mezut Özil, Sami Khedira and the youngsters Mario Götze and Marco Reus have impressed football fans at home and abroad.

DW has reported on their hopes for the Euro 2012 competition - which were dashed by Italy yet again, on their success in World Cup qualifiers - but against small teams - with a shock result against Sweden late in the year when a four goal lead just melted away.
