10 years of YouTube in videos

As the world's most popular video-sharing platform turns 10, DW has a look at its biggest hits and trends.

On February 14, 2005, three former PayPal employees - Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim - registered the domain youtube.com to create a video-sharing website on which users could upload, share, and view videos, with the initial funding provided by angel investors. A public preview of the site was only available in May that year.

YouTube is now the world's third most popular website, trailing only Google and Facebook, and that's not for nothing: it has one billion users and it sees 300 hours of video uploaded every minute, according to the website's own statistics.

We decided to look back at the last decade and chose one video for each year.
